Fridge won’t work at all
If your fridge or freezer will not work at all you need to start by making a few basic checks. Make sure that the appliance is switched on at the mains and that the fridge thermostat is set to the correct position. Next make sure that the fridge is plugged in and that the fuse hasn’t blown in the plug. You can test the plug by trying other appliances in the same socket.
In the case of a faulty socket you will find that other appliances will not work when plugged into it either. If there is a power failure or if a mains fuse has tripped, you will find that the electricity is not working elsewhere in the home.
Sometimes the compressor can overheat. A way to check whether this is happening is to unplug the fridge for a couple of hours, then plug it back in. If it starts to work again once it has had a chance to cool down then this is a sign that the problem may be due to a faulty compressor. Other damage that can stop a fridge or freezer from working is if the electrical cords are worn or if an extension lead is faulty. If you are using an extension lead with your fridge, try using it without to see if it makes any difference.
Fridges need to have a gap of three inches at the sides and the back to allow air to circulate. If the gap is insufficient it can cause problems.
There are a number of other faults that can cause a fridge or freezer to stop working, but you need to have expert help to check these out.
